Business Bay knife attack case: Dubai court upholds prison term of convict
Dubai Court of Appeal has upheld the 3 month prison term of a defendant who attacked three men with a knife, threatened them and used derogatory words during an early evening confrontation in Dubai’s Business Bay district.
According to the case files, the first victim, who is also Egyptian, and the defendant were pushing into a vehicle driven by the first victim at around 2.45am on April 4, 2024. The defendant and another man still at large got into the car.
The first victim had recently finished work in the Business Bay area and got into his car only to be startled by the defendant’s partner opening the back passenger door and putting a claw around his neck.
And the accused then pulled into the driver’s seat with the victim.
In the victims’ descriptions, the intruders made the victim drive them out and made derogatory comments about him.
The victim wouldn’t do it, and demanded an explanation; so the backseat partner grabbed a knife, placed it in the victim’s neck, and drove him again.
During the 15-minute standoff, the victim tried to signal by putting the car’s sunroof open and calling for help. Two men, both Egyptians, heard his calls and came running to help.
One went out through the back door to help but was knifed by the man who was carrying the knife and broke his hands.
The other man went to the defendant and smashed the driver’s door. He pulled the offender from the car but the co-accused jabbed him in the face and hid.
The men tamed the defendant before police were able to arrest him.
The doctor’s report showed the first victim was stabbed in his thigh and the second victim was bitten in his hands. The third victim had a knife in his face.
The defendant denied the accusations in interrogation, insisting that he was mediating a fight with his friend and had been punched in the head. But the court found that all the evidence, from the victims’ testimony to the medical records, was sufficient to convict him.
The accused received a term of three months in jail and then deportation.
