Bayer and Silal: Transforming UAE Agriculture for Climate Resilience
Agricultural Innovation in the UAE: Bayer and Silal Collaborate for Sustainable Farming
Bayer, a global leader in life sciences, partners with agri-tech company Silal to bolster sustainable agriculture in the UAE. The collaboration aims to conduct extensive trials on over 30 varieties of vegetable seeds, evaluating their performance under challenging desert conditions. The initiative focuses on enhancing seed survival and resilience, crucial in combating climate change challenges. The trials, spanning open-field and mid-tech greenhouse setups, will assess crop endurance, quality, and shelf-life characteristics. The data generated not only benefits local agricultural practices but also informs global strategies for countries facing similar climate change challenges. Hugo Hagen, a senior representative of Bayer Middle East, emphasizes the significance of innovative solutions and advanced technologies in reclaiming agricultural lands in arid desert conditions. The collaboration also includes capacity-building programs for local agronomists, leveraging Bayer's BayG.A.P. initiative to train farmers on good agricultural practices and integrate them into the food value chain. The phased approach involves training agricultural engineers and farm managers, who, in turn, extend capacity-building efforts to reach over 300 growers in Silal's network. The program covers essential topics such as integrated pest management, safe use of crop protection products, application technology, and irrigation.
