Al Barsha gas explosion: Woman battles for life after suffering severe burns
A woman from Dubai is still fighting for her life after suffering from severe burns during an explosion in the building she lived in in Al Barsha earlier this month. According to Angely, her sister, Annalyn, who lived on the first floor of the building directly above the restaurant where the gas explosion happened, has 65 percent burns and is currently in the burn unit of a government hospital.
Angely told Khaleej Times over phone, “I work in Saudi Arabia as a nurse, and I have not yet been able to travel to the UAE. I am hoping to come there by the end of May when I will be able to get a few days of leave.
A fire breakout was reported at Al Zarooni building on Halim Street in Barsha 1 on May 13.
In a statement made by Dubai Civil Defense (DCD), the cause of the incident was a gas leak that happened in the restaurant, but it was contained in record time. Several other residents reported that they were spending the following days with friends and relatives.
In Angely’s words, her sister and her brother-in-law got burns and were taken to the hospital. Her sister was in a more critical state and is still in a burn unit while her brother-in-law is more stable and is healing in the ward.“ It was quite late in the night, and they were preparing to go to bed,” she said. “That is when the disaster occurred.”
Timely updates
She said that the rest of the family was being updated frequently about the clinic’s progress and there was still much work to do in the recovery process. In images shared with Khaleej Times, the Filipina was shown propped up in a hospital bed with multiple devices attached to her body. The sister confirmed that Annalyn has been tracheostomized, which means that an incision is made into the windpipe and attached to a tube that leads into the lungs so that breathing becomes easier.
“We are stressed about their medical costs and how life post this will be like for them,” she stated. “Burn injury recovery takes a considerable amount of time and entails a lot of skin care.”
One of the main sources of income for the family, Annalyn and her husband have been UAE residents for over a decade. Starting out as a receptionist, Annalyn recently landed a new position at a gym where her husband had been working for a number of years.
