Abu Dhabi mandatory pet registration to manage stray animals, risk of disease
The authorities have issued a warning to Abu Dhabi pet owners about utilizing the grace period to register their pets through the TAMM portal and prevent fines next year.
Dr Mariam Al Shamsi from the Department of Municipalities and Transport stated that non-compliant pet owners will receive educational warnings and guidance this year with no fines being applied. Beginning the following year all individuals who do not comply with the regulations will face penalties as stipulated by the existing rules.
The phased approach offers incentives for voluntary compliance while establishing mechanisms to deal with consistent violators. She added that pet owners should understand these regulations protect their pets’ welfare.
Dr Al Shamsi emphasized that the regulation aims at controlling stray animal populations to protect public health and ensure animal welfare while enhancing community safety.
The growing presence of stray animals creates public health dangers through disease transmission while simultaneously causing residential area disturbances. A more efficient system for pet population control became necessary.
The new system grants veterinary clinics the exclusive authority to handle pet registration because they take on a vital function in the registration process. Under the new system veterinarians must perform health examinations, confirm records, and assist pet owners with registration through the TAMM portal.
DMT provided clinics with specialised training sessions and awareness workshops about the Animal Ownership System and future service demand projections in order to prepare for the expected increase in registrations. The clinics receive technical assistance together with a “specialised dashboard” which enables real-time registration data access to optimize workflow.
Pet owners are being educated about new requirements through active public awareness campaigns. Dr Al Shamsi explained that their strategy involves public awareness campaigns along with a streamlined registration process on the TAMM portal and assistance available at specific veterinary clinics.
Veterinary clinics and pet stores will display posters with QR codes that direct users to FAQs for straightforward process information. DMT’s Instagram bio links to the FAQs which provides pet owners with easy access to all important details in a single location.
Dr Al Shamsi explains that the system delivers tangible benefits for owners while advancing responsible pet ownership. Pet owners receive legal ownership documentation which becomes crucial during pet losses or ownership conflicts through this program. The TAMM portal will enable pet owners to monitor their pets' vaccination records and get automatic notifications for future vaccination appointments.
According to Dr Al Shamsi there has been an increase in pet adoptions and heightened awareness about animal health and welfare. This initiative serves as a forward-thinking solution to current trends by aiming to manage the increasing pet population responsibly while improving both service delivery and monitoring capabilities.
The registration system will provide accurate pet population data for Abu Dhabi despite the current absence of such information. The absence of reliable data on pet numbers in the Emirate prompted the development of the pet registration system which now serves as a comprehensive database to track pet ownership and promote responsible pet ownership through improved oversight.
Microchipping your pet is required during the registration procedure. Dr. Al Shamsi confirmed that there are no existing plans to integrate DNA profiling into the system. TAMM will develop into an all-in-one platform with new services including pet insurance and maps of pet-friendly areas to serve pet owners better.
Pet registration remains complimentary across participating veterinary clinics throughout Abu Dhabi to maintain inclusive access. All veterinary clinics across Abu Dhabi will eventually become centers that offer these services. The registration process is currently without cost and requires only essential medical treatments necessary to keep pets healthy and thriving according to her conclusion.
