Abu Dhabi extends maternity leave for private sector employees
Abu Dhabi announced on Tuesday an extension of maternity leave for Emirati women working in the private sector. This new policy aims to support working mothers by providing additional time off, enhancing work-life balance, and promoting family well-being. The move reflects the UAE's commitment to improving family-friendly policies and supporting women in the workforce.
Authorities have confirmed that the previously announced 90-day maternity leave will be applicable to mothers giving birth from September 1, 2024. This extended leave aims to provide enhanced support for new mothers, allowing them more time to recover and bond with their newborns. The policy reflects a commitment to improving family support and work-life balance for Emirati women.
In July, authorities announced an extension of maternity leave for Emirati women working in Abu Dhabi's private sector, increasing it from 60 days to 90 days. This extension aims to offer better support for new mothers, enhancing their ability to recover and care for their newborns while balancing work responsibilities.
While those in the public sector have always been entitled to three months of paid maternity leave, women in private firms are typically granted 60 days — 45 days fully paid and 15 days half paid, according to the UAE Labour Law.
Now, under the new initiative, even Emirati mothers who are in the private sector will be able to get a 90-day leave — "to ensure sufficient time to rest and care for the newborn", the authorities said. The Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority will be implementing the new rule.
Likewise, new mums will be given assistance during the first weeks of motherhood under the 'home visit service' to be rolled out by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority. The goal, it said, is to support parents' well-being and monitor the baby's growth and development.
In addition to extended maternity leave and home visits, Emirati couples will gain access to a range of supportive measures and financial relief packages. These include marriage loans, loan deductions, and rental assistance, all designed to ease financial burdens and enhance family support. These initiatives reflect a commitment to strengthening family welfare and financial stability.
