5-day paid holiday for Sharjah government employees for 54th Eid Al Etihad

Sharjah has declared the public holiday for government workers on the 54th Union Day.

Monday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 2 will be holidays and work will resume from Wednesday, December 3, Sharjah Human Resources said in a statement.

This would mean a 5-day holiday for public sector employees as they normally have a three-day weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In the UAE, the government had earlier in the day announced the holiday for public and private sector employees. December 1 and 2, which is Monday and Tuesday, have been declared paid holidays for these employees.

The UAE's Ministry of Education also issued a statement that private and public schools will have a holiday on December 1 and 2, corresponding to Monday and Tuesday. Classes will resume from Wednesday, December 3 when official working hours start.

In Sharjah, this would translate into a 5-day holiday for students, while those in other emirates will have a 4-day break.

A Cabinet resolution that came into effect from January 1, 2025, allowed certain public holidays in the UAE to be shifted to the start or end of the week, if they fall in the middle of the week. An earlier announcement had declared Tuesday, December 2 and Wednesday, December 3, as a paid holiday for Eid Al Etihad, however, this year the holidays have been shifted to Monday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 2.

The resolution does not apply to Eid holidays, in addition, it can only be issued through a decision issued by the Cabinet in this regard. A single holiday policy in the country for both sectors of the public and private places the employees in both sectors in a state where they receive the same number of holidays during the year.
