Lower Gold Prices Bring Relief Ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali
The recent dip in gold prices has brought welcome news to shoppers across the UAE, particularly the Indian expatriate community, which is preparing for the festive season.
With Dhanteras and Diwali approaching, gold purchases are considered auspicious by many families. Coins, bars and jewellery are traditionally bought during this period as symbols of prosperity and good fortune.
Lower prices can help families manage their festive budgets more effectively, allowing them to purchase more gold or choose heavier jewellery pieces for the same amount of money.
Global Gold and Silver Prices Recover
International precious metal prices also moved higher on Thursday morning. Spot gold rose 1.4 per cent to $4,144 an ounce, while silver gained 0.4 per cent to reach $205.70 an ounce.
The recovery followed Wednesday’s decline, which was driven by stronger-than-expected US inflation data. The latest figures increased expectations of a possible US Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month, putting pressure on gold prices.
US Inflation and Interest Rate Expectations Influence Gold
Gold prices remain sensitive to changes in inflation, the US dollar and interest rate expectations. Higher interest rates can reduce the appeal of gold because the metal does not generate interest income.
The stronger-than-expected inflation reading on Wednesday increased concerns about the direction of US monetary policy, contributing to the decline in gold prices.
However, uncertainty surrounding global economic conditions and geopolitical developments continues to influence investor demand for precious metals.
Experts Highlight Challenges Facing Gold Prices
Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com, said gold was navigating a challenging environment shaped by monetary policy pressures, geopolitical risks and changing inflation expectations.
He noted that the metal's recent price movements should not be assessed solely on the basis of its decline or its proximity to specific support levels.
According to Massabni, the strength of the US dollar, interest rate expectations and demand for safe-haven assets are competing factors that will influence gold's next move.
As the festive season approaches, UAE shoppers will be watching gold prices closely to determine the best time to make their purchases.
