Visiting the UAE? Travel insurance excludes pre-existing medical conditions coverage
According to industry experts, tourists can purchase specialized insurance in their home country to cover health concerns specific to the individual.
Travel insurance policies issued in the UAE do not cover pre-existing medical conditions of tourists, and they have been consistent on this point, say industry executives. They, thus, recommend tourists to opt for a specialized health cover at such times that caters for their particular health concerns.
“Infractions that occur prior to travel are not covered under travel indemnity policies. Where tourists are involved, they have to be covered for those health conditions under the health cover, which can only be bought from the home country at this point,” said Faisal Abbas, vice president of employee benefit (EB) and general insurance at Continental Group.
He noted that travel insurance coverage typically offered in this region takes care of risks of medical expenses incurred on emergency treatment usually not below Dh200000.
“Pre-existing conditions not covered under inbound travel insurance people, as the name itself implies, pre-existing conditions will never be covered in this regard,” said Avinash Babur, CEO of Insurance Market.ae.

Specialized policies
Babur continued: Pre-existing medical tourists know very well that they have their limitations because most of the normal travel insurance does not cover these conditions. “They may need to seek specialized health insurance that includes coverage for their specific health issues. Such policies typically must be arranged through either international health insurance providers or specialized from their country which cover international insurance,” he added.
The insurance’s exotic features accrue additional costs which in some instances may be a little on the high side officially or lower depending on the graveness and type of the pre-existing condition and the potential overall caps of that policy. Tourists are advised to seek insurance before travelling in their countries.
Faisal Abbas proposed ensuring that the health insurance purchased in their home country should cover pre-existing illnesses, in this case, those conditions affecting travelers before leaving an insurance company to travel abroad. “It is rather health insurance for overseas travel, which can conveniently be arranged in a foreign country containing prerequisite elective and pre-existing conditions in Abu Dhabi. This information is generally found under the ‘area of cover’ and ‘pre-existing’ clauses in the health insurance policy.”
Minimum cost
While inbound UAE tourists are required to purchase travel insurance, the cost varies depending on the length of their intended stay. It is reported by Insurance Market that the cost of these premiums is Dh 45 to Dh 200 for trips not exceeding one month. For those staying longer than a month the premiums will start from Dh 80 and can go to Dh 300. A range of premiums also reflects as coverage levels, from the basic one to more extensive packages.
Continental Group states basic travel insurance can cost as little as Dh fifty for single entry, 30-day coverage tourist insurance for inbound tourists. In the case of multiple entries in a period exceeding 180 days, it generally costs between Dh 150 and Dh 200 depending on the level of coverage and the selected insurer.
As stated in Unitrust Insurance report, it is usually between Dh48 for a cover of 30 days and Dh 100 for 90 days. Travel insurance for tourists going above 70 years of age is relatively expensive; it could be 3 to4 times cost otherwise than that.
Growing demand
Avinash Babur noted that the demand for inbound travel insurance is indeed growing with a 10 percent observed rise between first quarter of 2024 and third quarter of 2024. “This increase is due in part to the influx of tourists during summer months in the UAE as this part of the region is in turn a travel destination while tourists are becoming more conscious of the need for travel insurance,” he explained.
Faisal Abbas mentioned however, the demand for inbound travel insurance has not been very buoyant. We`ve seen just a small rise, mainly because even now many of the underwriters prefer catering to outbound travel insurance. In addition, it’s that time of the year where we are experiencing summer in the UAE, which is generally not the high season for inbound tour travel. Usually however, the main uptick happens between September and March when tourists are attracted because of the cold weather and there is a large influx of tourists,” he added.
Moin ur Rehman, executive director of Unitrust Insurance Broker, said these days, people are more aware of the product and therefore there is more need for such coverage.
Advice
Moin echoed that the cost of hospitalization in the UAE is too excessive which can put anyone in financial disorder in future. It means that tourists are recommended to have some sort of adequate travel insurance.
Avinash Babur urged those tourists who want to travel to the UAE to take travel insurance for medical expenses, accidents and trip cancellation and other eventualities. “As many policies have limits on covering any pre-existing illness, it is advisable that persons with pre-existing medical conditions seek a policy that will cover their medical conditions. And since it is established that the cost of insurance varies with the trip length, holidaymakers will have to be very careful to evaluate their requirements in order to select the appropriate length of coverage.”
Faisal Abbas said that tourists need to service fully comprehensive health insurance based in their country that will cover elective treatment and pre-existing health problems.
