The host nation snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after requiring 15 from their final four balls. Ben Stokes’ heroic 84 not out from 98 balls saw England tie New Zealand on 241 apiece after the regulation 50-overs to extend an incredible game further.

Between them, Stokes and Joss Buttler managed 15 runs from Trent Boult’s six deliveries in the Super Over and although New Zealand’s pairing of Jimmy Neesham and Martin Guptill matched that total from Jofra Archer, England was awarded the victory on boundary countback. Requiring two runs from the final ball of the day to secure victory, New Zealand could only get one as Buttler ran out Guptill to ensure that England won on the narrowest of margins having hit more boundaries over the course of the game.

Having sealed a miraculous victory in the most dramatic fashion possible, England’s players naturally celebrated their win in style after the reality of their achievement had sunk in with jubilant scenes taking place on the pitch and in the dressing room.
