The practice of fasting leads to reduced workplace productivity since it impacts both energy levels and cognitive performance as well as emotional control. UAE medical professionals state that fasting-related impacts on productivity appear strongest during the first days but individuals generally adapt to fasting with time by creating routines that reduce efficiency disruptions.

The Muslim community in the UAE began observing Ramadan through fasting starting on March 1st which signifies the beginning of the lunar calendar's ninth month. Muslims throughout the world observe this sacred month by fasting from sunrise until sunset without consuming food or water.

Adaptation boosts focus and clarity

Dr Hala Abdulkareem, Consultant Family Medicine, Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi, said: Fasting affects productivity which research identifies as presenting both challenges and benefits based on individual adaptation and professional working patterns. The first few days of fasting show a reduction in working memory and attention span according to research because of diminished blood glucose levels.

Fasting initially reduces productivity but most people adjust after some days leading to better focus and improved discipline together with clearer thinking for some.

Studies confirm workers experience a drop in energy during the afternoon while showing better performance levels in the morning.

According to Abdulkareem, fasting did not noticeably decrease reaction time nor mental awareness even though initial tiredness occurred. Brain function improvements and enhanced neuroplasticity have become associated with intermittent fasting practices which resemble Ramadan fasting. Research has shown that fasting can increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) production which plays a crucial role in learning and memory support.

Work on complex tasks in the morning

The practice of fasting develops self-discipline and self-control which results in better time management skills and heightened work efficiency.
Doctors recommend strategic adjustments including tackling complex tasks during morning hours and maintaining hydration levels to boost productivity.

According to specialist psychiatrist Dr Raga Sandhya Gandi from Zulekha Hospital Dubai focus maintenance requires organisation alongside new routines tailored to demands as well as effective time and task management together with perception shifts from time-based to outcome-based methods while eliminating distractions and ensuring adequate rest and sleep.

Gandi explained employers can support their staff through flexible work schedules and remote work options when appropriate along with providing counseling and stress management resources. Coffee drinkers should slowly decrease their consumption before Ramadan to minimize withdrawal symptoms.

During Ramadan people should keep in mind that this time requires self-control while fasting offers a chance to build stronger mental endurance.

Dr Saima Khan, specialist family medicine, Prime Medical Centre, Jumeriah branch, said: Use peak energy in the morning hours to tackle high-priority tasks. Use scheduled breaks to remain attentive and avoid exhaustion by taking brief pauses. Maintain energy throughout Ramadan by consuming nutrient-dense meals together with slow-digesting foods during suhoor and iftar.

Ensure enough rest by focusing on sleep quality while modifying sleeping schedules accordingly. Practice mindfulness and light movement. Practicing deep breathing exercises along with stretching routines can boost your ability to concentrate.
