Dubai's Terminal 3 at Dubai Airports is set to offer passport-free travel, with biometrics and facial recognition becoming the new standard in global travel. Major General Obaid Muhair bin Suroor, Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), stated that a new system would be implemented in November at Terminal 3. This system will allow passengers to use their biometrics to complete all necessary procedures, replacing electronic gates with smart gates for a seamless travel experience.

Dubai Airports has been working on this project for several years, utilizing the latest biometric technology to create a touchless travel journey for passengers. Travelers' faces and fingerprints will serve as their identity instead of traditional passports, streamlining airport processes and enhancing the speed and efficiency of travel.

However, officials have also called for data sharing between airports to expedite passenger flow. Adel Ahmed Al Redha emphasized the need for passenger information integration at every touchpoint to reduce interactions and enhance the passenger experience.

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) will play a pivotal role in data collection and process enhancement, making travel smoother and more efficient.

Miguel Leitmann, co-founder and group CEO at Vision-Box, highlighted that biometrics are becoming the new normal, with facial recognition being key to ensuring a smooth flow of travelers.

Major General Obaid emphasized that technology would replace human involvement at ports and airports, creating new job opportunities in areas such as monitoring and analyzing processes.

Looking ahead, there are plans for a common database among different countries to enable the use of biometrics for international travel. However, this remains a significant challenge at present.

Adel Al Redha stressed that technology is the solution to addressing challenges in the aviation sector, emphasizing that seamless operations should rely on 90% automation and 10% human interaction in the future.

The move towards passport-free travel using biometrics represents a significant step forward in modernizing and streamlining airport processes, making travel more convenient for passengers while maintaining security measures.
