Rain, with alerts in effect over the weekend

This forecast comes on the heels of unsettled weather over the weekend. Parts of the UAE were swept by rain on Saturday morning, as strong winds continued along with thunder and lightning, while water accumulation was reported in some areas.

Meanwhile, rain was heavy in the eastern areas of the emirate, especially in Dibba Al Fujairah and Shis in Khor Fakkan as seen in videos posted on March 21 by weather-focused social media channel, Storm CentreFlowing wadis were also seen in mountainous areas.

The NCM also issued warnings on March 21 of accumulated rainfall in some coastal and internal regions, and flash flood risks over mountainous areas during heavy downpours.

Safety advisory for residents

Calling on residents to observe safety measures while it rains, including avoiding unnecessary travel and driving carefully when they must go out, and use lowbeam headlights whenever visibility deteriorates, the NCM said in its most recent advisory.

People were also encouraged to listen for official updates on the weather, and not spread false information.

The Abu Dhabi Police called on drivers to review weather conditions before departure and avoid areas where water collects or valleys that will flow.

Officials reminded that entering flowing valleys is a major violation and the penalties include Dh2,000 fine, 23 traffic points and its impounding for 60 days.

Authorities step up preparedness

Earlier, on March 19, the NCEMA said it organized a coordination meeting with the Ministry of Interior, the NCM and vital partners to review forecasts and expectations for coming conditions.

The authority had issued a warning of rainfall at different intensities, possible hail and heightened winds that could result in blowing dust and reduced visibility.

It said the authorities were ensuring readiness in all sectors, and updates on safety would be provided through official channels.
