Philippines to celebrate first day of Eid Al Fitr on March 21

The Eid Al Fitr celebration will officially start Saturday, March 21, according to its national government.

Launching Hilal (the Moon)-sighting activities, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) said it decided to declare March 21 as the start of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijrah based on results.

Its adjustment was in coordination with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao DarulIfta, various Ulama groups as well as the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, NCMF said.

The whole Philippines, meanwhile, has begun celebrating Eid Al Fitr today (March 20) after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued Proclamation No. 1189 declaring March 20 a regular holiday.

As a result, government offices and schools and banks are shut. Alluding to Philippine labour laws, business establishments such as private offices and shops which choose to open up their businesses today would need to pay their workers twice the daily rates.

His declaration is to usher the rest of the nation into joining Muslim Filipinos in celebrating, Marcos said.

Of 120 million Filipinos, around seven million Muslims make up 6.42% of the total population.
