Mortal remains of 20 Indians reach India from Kuwait after delay due to Iran war
Dead bodies of 20 Indian nationals who died in various incidents, including the Middle Eastern war in Kuwait reached Cochin International Airport in Kerala on Wednesday.
One of those who died was Santhanasevam Krishnan (37) from Muthukulathur in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district. He was assassinated in a drone strike on a water desalination plant. The other 19 Indians had perished in separate incidents and natural causes, but their return was delayed because of the ongoing conflict.
So far, the situation in West Asia has claimed the lives of eight Indian nationals and one person is missing, a senior official from the ministry of external affairs told reporters on Monday. All affected nationals' bodies will be repatriated at the earliest, added India's mission in Kuwait which is coordinating with local authorities.
“Unfortunately, an Indian national died in Kuwait due to an attack,” Aseem Mahajan, Joint Secretary (Gulf), said at an inter-ministerial briefing earlier in New Delhi.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of the deceased. “Our mission in Kuwait is in touch with the family and is closely coordinating with the local authorities to provide all assistance and for early return of his mortal remains to India.”
Eight Indian citizens have sadly died and one Indian national is still missing in different incidents.’
The Indian embassy in Kuwait also expressed condolences over the death of Krishnan after the attack on the desalination facility. The embassy said in a statement on X, “Embassy of India in Kuwait extends its deepest condolences at the tragic passing away of an Indian national due to an attack on a desalination plant in Kuwait. “The Embassy is in close coordination with the Kuwaiti authorities to provide all possible assistance and support.”
Kuwait’s ministry of electricity, water and renewable energy said Monday that an Indian worker had been killed and a service building at the plant badly damaged in what was described as an Iranian strike Sunday evening.
