Lt. Col. Abdulla Tarish Al Amimi has been a dedicated member of the Dubai Police for 25 years, playing a significant role in announcing iftar every day during Ramadan through the firing of the Ramadan cannon. Despite the tradition's importance, he hasn't had the chance to break his fast with his own family for seven years.

Major Al Amimi's role in firing the Ramadan cannon has made him a familiar and respected figure among the people, especially children, who eagerly wait for his signal. His commitment to duty and tradition is such that he prioritizes sharing the iftar meal with his colleagues and the community over being with his family at home.

For Major Al Amimi, the sense of belonging and fulfillment he derives from serving the community outweighs any personal sacrifices. His participation in this age-old tradition brings joy not only to himself but also to hundreds of families who gather daily to witness the cannon's launch.

The tradition of using cannons to announce iftar dates back to the 1960s in Dubai when speaker systems were not widely available in mosques. Recognizing its significance, Major Al Amimi and the Dubai Police modernized and revitalized the practice in 2017, aiming to preserve cultural heritage and foster unity among the diverse population of the UAE.

Despite not being able to break his fast with his family, Major Al Amimi finds gratification in seeing the happiness and excitement on people's faces as they witness the cannon's launch. His dedication to this initiative reflects his belief in the importance of maintaining cultural traditions and fostering a sense of community among the UAE's residents, regardless of their backgrounds.

With over 200 nationalities residing in the UAE, the Ramadan cannon has become a cherished moment for people of all faiths, symbolizing unity and shared cultural heritage. Whether watched on television or experienced in person, it serves as a reminder of the country's rich traditions and the spirit of togetherness during the holy month of Ramadan.
