This invention changed the commuting game! It’s been used all over the country for years now and it’s safe to say they’ve become a staple. But for the safety of the public, a few rules have been added.

Dubai has launched a free e-scooter license permit that includes attending training courses and passing an online test

Users will be able to apply for the free permit on the RTA website.

Those who hold a local, international or motorcycle driving licence are exempt from obtaining the permit for operating the scooters

Electric scooters will be allowed on select cycling tracks in 10 districts across Dubai from April 13.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said, “The initial phase covers the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Internet City, Al Rigga, 2nd of December Street, The Palm Jumeirah, and City Walk. It also covers safe roads and tracks within specific zones at Al Qusais, Al Mankhool, and Al Karama, in addition to 167-km long tracks designated for bicycles and scooters across Dubai, excluding the cycling tracks at Saih Assalam, Al Qudra and Meydan,” said Al Tayer.

RTA also stated that they will be deploying at least 2,000 e-scooters.

Scooters must be parked in designated areas only to avoid fines

RTA has provided parking spaces for shared electric scooters along the designated tracks and permitted areas. Parking bikes and electric scooters in non-designated spaces in a way that may obstruct the movement of vehicles or pedestrians can result in a AED200 fine.
